چکیده

The success of an ENSO-based statistical rainfall prediction scheme and the in#uence of ENSO on Australia are shown to vary in association with a coherent, inter-decadal oscillation in surface temperature over the Paci"c Ocean. When this Inter-decadal Paci"c Oscillation (IPO) raises temperatures in the tropical Paci"c Ocean, there is no robust relationship between year-to-year Australian climate variations and ENSO. When the IPO lowers temperature in the same region, on the other hand, year-to-year ENSO variability is closely associated with year-to-year variability in rainfall, surface temperature, river #ow and the domestic wheat crop yield. The contrast in ENSO's in#uence between the two phases of the IPO is quite remarkable. This highlights exciting new avenues for obtaining improved climate predictions.

Multi-decadal variability of drought risk, eastern Australia

A number of previous studies have identified changes in the climate occurring on decadal to multi-decadal time-scales. Recent studies also have revealed multi-decadal variability in the modulation of the magnitude of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) impacts on rainfall and stream flow in Australia and other areas. This study investigates multidecadal variability of drought risk by analysing ...

Interdecadal Amplitude Modulation of El Ni~ no–Southern Oscillation and Its Impact on Tropical Pacific Decadal Variability*

The amplitude of El Ni~ no–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) displays pronounced interdecadal modulations in observations. The mechanisms for the amplitude modulation are investigated using a 2000-yr preindustrial control integration from the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory Climate Model, version 2.1 (GFDL CM2.1). ENSO amplitude modulation is highly correlated with the second empirical orthogon...

ENSO Modulation: Is It Decadally Predictable?

Observations and climate simulations exhibit epochs of extreme El Ni~ no–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) behavior that can persist for decades. Previous studies have revealed a wide range of ENSO responses to forcings from greenhouse gases, aerosols, and orbital variations, but they have also shown that interdecadal modulation of ENSO can arise even without such forcings. The present study examines...

Low-Frequency Variability of the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass Identified from the China Coastal Waters and Adjacent Seas Reanalysis

This study uses the China Coastal Waters and Adjacent Seas Reanalysis (CORA) data to investigate the interannual and decadal variability of the Yellow Sea cold watermass (YSCWM) and its relationship to climate indices including the Arctic Oscillation (AO), El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). On the interannual timescale, the strong correlation between win...

Reversed Spatial Asymmetries between El Niño and La Niña and Their Linkage to Decadal ENSO Modulation in CMIP3 Models

This study examines preindustrial simulations from Coupled Model Intercomparison Project, phase 3 (CMIP3), models to show that a tendency exists for El Niño sea surface temperature anomalies to be located farther eastward than La Niña anomalies during strong El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events but farther westward than La Niña anomalies during weak ENSO events. Such reversed spatial asym...
